The toothbrush is an important usable cleaning instrument, which we use regularly. Most people start their morning with the use of a toothbrush. It is not confirmed when the first toothbrush was invented, however it is supposed that around 3000 BC the first toothbrush came up in the form of a chew stick, which was used by ancient civilians. It was in the shape of a slim stick with a frayed end. Another early form of toothbrush was the bristle toothbrush. It was similar to what we use today, but this toothbrush was made up of solid hog’s hairs connected to a handle made of bamboo or bone. The nylon-bristled toothbrush was introduced in 1938, and was rapidly accepted due to its good oral hygiene quality.

A revolution came in the market of America with the origin of electric toothbrushes in 1960. These toothbrushes were sold and produced on a mass level throughout the country.

Initially, the electronic toothbrush along with charger was invented in 1939 in Switzerland, but it did not come out in the open market until 1960. It was in 1961 when the company ‘General Electric’ came up with the rechargeable cordless toothbrush. The first rotary toothbrush, called the ‘Interplak’ became available to the general public in 1987. It was available in different models and varieties. It was believed that the Interplak was capable to eliminate plaque, and could prevent gingival bleeding better than other manual toothbrushes.

Nowadays, a number of varieties of toothbrushes can be found in the market at a large scale. Toothbrushes are used with fluoride for cleaning. Generally, dentists recommend the use of soft toothbrushes because hard toothbrushes can cause damage to your teeth. Soft bristles are also considered good at eliminating plaque and debris from the teeth. Besides this, dentists recommend the use of a small-handled toothbrush, as it can reach easily at each and every corner of your mouth. Toothbrushes are generally made of synthetic materials.

As there is such a wide variety of toothbrushes available today, this can create confusion for you when buying. Therefore it is necessary to consider that what kind of toothbrush will best suit your teeth. As an alternative, you can also use a powered toothbrush for cleaning your teeth, especially if you experience difficulties during brushing. You should replace your toothbrush within three months.

It is important that you are using a good quality toothbrush and changing it frequently. Undoubtedly, you would not like to have any diseases in your teeth, so by brushing regularly you can maintain healthy teeth as well as an attractive smile.

You’re over 30, over 40, or over 50 even and have always wanted to have what you thought was a "pretty" smile. You’ve seen Pretty Woman several times and just can’t get the image of Julia Roberts out of your mind when her Prince Charming climbs the fire escape to claim his Princess. Hollywood has a way with drama but Julia Roberts’ smile is the real thing.

It’s my understanding her orthodontist in Smyrna, Georgia (outside of Atlanta) held an in-office contest for his patients. The patients were asked to write what they wanted to be when they grew up. The person who achieved their dream would win a supply of toothbrushes and toothpaste for the entire town of Smyrna. It is said Julia Roberts wrote she’d become an Actress. Her town received toothbrushes and toothpaste, courtesy of Ms. Roberts!

I am unable to validate this story but being a Dental Healthcare Consultant specializing in Marketing, I absolutely love it!

Adults have given me various reasons for not pursuing their desire to start orthodontic treatment. I think the number one reason has been: "I’m too old for braces." My answer has been:

If you’re young enough for the crowding, protrusion, spacing or overlapping of teeth to bother you, then you’re not too old to have it corrected.

The second reason I’ve heard relates to cost. We spend money on things that do not appreciate in value. How much do you value self? Besides, a reputable and most sort after orthodontist offers many flexible payment options. In-house plans are without finance charges. Capital One Healthcare Finance and Care Credit are also other sources for financing your healthy smile.

We are living longer and dental health should be a concern, long-term. The risk of cavities with proper hygiene and regular dental checkups and cleanings reduce, as we get older. The primary concern is periodontal disease.

Aging gracefully isn’t a terrible thing. Dental implants are more costly than orthodontic treatment. So are veneers (full mouth). Dentures although very much an option and the only option at times, can be ruled out by your orthodontist, general dentist and periodontist. I would want to avoid dentures at all cost.

A multitude of orthodontic options (brackets) are available nowadays compared to 25 years ago. The biggest advancement occurring over the past five-to 10 years has been the innovation in the types of wires (ligatures) used to move teeth. Some options include:

  1. Clear brackets (ceramic and non-ceramic) Ultradent’s Opal and Unitek’s clear brackets
  2. Lingual braces – The new iBraces (These are made in Germany and customized by a robot. They fit behind the teeth.)
  3. Clear Aligners – The new OrthoClear, Red, White & Blue System and Invisalign
  4. Traditional Metal – Speed braces (self-ligating), Damon System and Alexander brackets

Call for an orthodontic consultation. Take this article with you, if you must. Get the answers to the questions looming on your mind about your smile. Get a clearer understanding of what I may have only touched on the surface in this article. Get the straight talk from your orthodontist.

Having your teeth straightened could take 10 years off your look — and it’s cheaper than plastic surgery.

Please note, not every patient is a candidate for braces. Not all are eligible for the clear aligners or lingual braces, either. Your treatment could perhaps begin with traditional metal or clear braces and be finished with aligners or lingual braces. Ask your orthodontist these questions. Find out your options and proceed from there.

A healthy, pretty smile can be in your future. You’re worth it. You deserve it. You want it. You won’t regret it. Go ahead and do it!

Bad breath. It is a condition that affects millions of people. This article will give you some general information on the diagnosis, cause and treatment of halitosis.

Do you think you might have Halitosis? Here are a few symptoms that you should look for.
Symptoms of Halitosis:
1. A frequent bad taste in your mouth.
2. Cotton mouth on a regular basis.
3. People often offer you gum or mints.
4. People back away when you talk.
5. Anxiety about your breath.
If you have any of these symptoms, you might have a case of Halitosis. You might want to see your dentist for treatment options.

So what can cause Halitosis?
The most common cause of bad breath is poor dental hygiene. Some of the other causes can include medical conditions such as gum disease, diabetes or even liver and kidney problems. Smoking can also be a common cause of bad breath since it tends to dry your mouth out.

So how do you treat Halitosis?
The most effective thing that you can do to treat Halitosis is to have proper oral hygiene. Brush and floss your teeth regularly to remove food particles that bacteria will feed on. Another small thing that you can do is chew sugar free gum after meals. Also you can avoid foods that cause bad breath like garlic and onions. If none of these things help your problem you should see a dentist for treatment.

With the abundance of beautiful images portraying a perfect looking smile, people today have been trained to focus on the looks of a mouth, as it smiles and moves, focusing on the shape of the lips, the condition of the teeth and the smoothness of the skin. As icons of fashion models and actresses illustrate their flawless porcelain-looking teeth, smooth skin, and full lips, people have been visiting plastic surgeons, beauty experts, and dermatologists, to request their assistance in reproducing the smile of their favorite star.

Consequently, this increasing demand has introduced the development of many treatments in plastic surgery, dermatology and permanent makeup to smooth the skin and enhance the size and shape of a person’s lips. Unfortunately, the desired outcomes of these procedures can often take as long as six to eight weeks, with multiple visits to the surgeon. Recently, a revolutionary new method has been introduced, to those interested in redesigning their smile, called the non-surgical smile lift. This procedure can lead to the same results as a plastic surgery one, but it accomplishes the requested outcome in just one to two visits. Since it is non-invasive, no cutting of the skin is necessary and patients are able to go back to their normal routine the day following the procedure.

This incredible revolution in cosmetic procedures, requiring zero recovery time, starts with the building of a strong foundation. In this case the foundation is that of teeth. For many years now it is commonly known that the way that the teeth are aligned in the mouth affects the appearance of the lower one third of the face, including the cheeks and lips. Loosing teeth can destroy a person’s appearance over time and dramatically change the way lips and cheeks appear on the person’s face. Ranging from lips’ sinking, cheeks having a hollow look, or the skin’s wrinkling the condition of the teeth can affect the overall face of a person and negatively alter its features’ appearance.

But fortunately today, with the use of proper cosmetic dental procedures, these problems can be corrected. Porcelain veneers that can thicken the upper portion of a tooth can decrease laugh lines. Visiting and consulting a cosmetic dentist can result in creating the smile you always dreamed of having and avoiding the pain and the stress associated with facial cosmetic surgery. By performing simple procedures, like elongating the veneers, the dentist can create a mouth that appears to be fuller, while longer teeth help to push out the lower lip, reducing wrinkles around it. Widening the width of the back teeth broadens the smile and gives a fuller, younger looking smile. Finally, placing lighter, natural looking veneers over yellow, stained teeth, the whole face brightens up and a more youthful appearance is created.

Thus, if you are considering some form of aesthetic surgery to make your lips fuller or get rid of wrinkles in the lower third of your face, it is advisable to speak to your cosmetic dentist first. There is a big possibility that by enhancing your smile you can create the smoother face and full, sexy lips of your desire.

Canker Sore Mouthwash Remedy

This was a canker sore treatment that I hadn’t come across up until it was too late. However, I was in the bathroom the other day doing my normal oral cleaning routine, and decided, what the hell, I’ll give it a try.

They said if you do this for 2 days, the canker sore will go away. I didn’t believe it at first, because a) you had to do it as soon as you feel the canker sore coming, and b) I didn’t think mouthwash would be able to cure it after I’d tried all those expensive systems to get rid of canker sores.

Anyways, I gave it a try, and it actually works. Check out the Mouthwash Canker Sore Remedy:

The mouthwash you use is very important. I prefer to use Listerine, but Scope may work too. This was all done with Listerine, so you may want to go out and get some before you do this.

Be sure your mouth is clean. That means you need to thoroughly brush and floss, then use mouthwash before even starting the canker sore treatment. Once your mouth is completely fresh and clean, pull out the mouthwash.

How you use the mouthwash isn’t as important as how frequently you use the mouthwash. Canker sores go away naturally, but the cleaner your mouth is, the less bacteria the canker sore will get infected by. So do this after every meal, before you go to sleep, and when you wake up.

Take the mouthwash, swish it around a little bit, then use your tongue to massage the canker sore(s). This is going to be painful, but it is the good pain, like when you can feel the germs being killed. Massage the canker sore with the mouthwash and tongue for about 30 seconds. After that, spit the Listerine out and do it again 5 minutes later.

That’s it. It was so simple, I didn’t believe it at first. However, when I tried it, it worked like a charm, and the best part is; Most people have mouthwash in their house to begin with. So no expensive systems, or embarassing trips to the dentist.

If you have a small, painful ulcer in your mouth, it is probably a canker sore. Before you can remedy a canker sore, you need to know how you get them.

What Causes Canker Sores?

1. If you are eating and you bite the lining of your mouth.

2. Stress can also add to the possibility of getting a canker sore.

3. food items like grains, nuts vinegar, soy have been known to cause canker sores in some people.

4. People with B1, B2, B6, and C Vitamin dificiencies will undoubtedly get more canker sores than others.

Canker Sore Remedies

Although it really depends on the person, a canker sore can take from 2 to 3 weeks to heal in the worst of cases. To provide relief from your canker sores one of the remedies I know of would be to mix equal amounts of milk of magnesia and benadryl allergy liquid and gargle for a minute. Spit it out afterwards. DO NOT SWALLOW. Do this every 6 hours or so.

Prevent Canker Sores

The foaming agent sodium lauryl sulfate ("SLS") is present in many toothpastes and mouthwashes. Some people agree that this substance is a factor in the development of canker sores. Look for SLS FREE toothpastes and mouthwashes to help fight your canker sores.

Crowns are generally used in cosmetic dentistry as a form of dental restoration and are fitted over the remaining part of the original tooth or used as a cap for dental implants.

Dental crowns are made of a variety of materials which include: • porcelain (generally used for front teeth as a straight porcelain crown is very natural looking but they are not as strong as bonded crowns) • porcelain bonded to metal • ceramic crowns which have the appearance of porcelain and the strength of bonded so are suitable for any position in the mouth • Gold Alloy, a very hard wearing crown that is available in gold or white.

Crowns are regularly used when teeth have been broken, have been largely destroyed through dental decay or are excessively worn. Crowns are moulded in a dental laboratory and, unlike basic filings, act as strengtheners for what is left of the original teeth.

With more and more people turning to cosmetic dentistry to create a perfect smile crowns have become widely used for improving the appearance of healthy teeth. This is a practice that isn’t totally supported in the dental industry as a portion of the original tooth has to be ground away to enable the crown to be fitted in place.

When there is very little of the original tooth left it may be necessary to insert a post into the root canal and cement into place before fitting the crown. The post will add support and help the dental crown stay in place.

As dental crowns are formed in a laboratory to get a crown fitted requires 2 trips to the dentist. Initially your dentist will take an impression of your teeth and provide you with a temporary crown if required. The new crown will be fitted 1 – 2 weeks later and will be fixed into place using dental cement.

Crowns are made to match the exact colour of your own teeth and will appear completely natural. You yourself might be aware of a crown for a few days after it is fitted but this will just be short term.

The life of a crown depends on the level of dental care. Many say a crown will last for 7 – 10 years but a well cared for crown can last a lot longer. Crowns are extremely hard wearing and durable but will not prevent further decay of the original tooth!

The cost of dental crowns is generally covered by dental insurance if they are used for restorative purposes. If you use any form of cosmetic dentistry, including dental crowns for appearance purposes you will normally have to cover the cost yourself.

A single dental crown will cost between $500 and $1,100 depending on restorative requirements and the materials used.

Every year, millions of people get canker sores . While they aren’t as harmful as they are annoying, a doctor’s visit isn’t really needed to get rid of canker sores. To get rid of them, you CAN get ointments and creams, or you can buy over-the-counter drugs that will help to keep the discomfort under control.

Although many factors contribute to canker sores, here are some of the most common reasons why you get them.

1. Sunshine. People with sensitive skinshould try to avoid the sun from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. It is between these times that the sun’s rays are most powerful. After several hours, sunbathers sometimes get a canker sore. Swimmers are another target for the sun’s rays, and canker sores. Be sure to where sunscreen on your face to help keep canker sores away.

2. Acidic foods. Citrus fruits, tomatoes, chocolate, and other tangy foods may aid in the creation of a canker sore. If you discover a pattern forming between the food and your canker sores, try to eat those food less frequently, or make substitutions. I.E. eat your pizza with white sauce instead of tomato sauce.

3. Stress. Canker sores can be yet another biproduct of stress. Do your best to balance your stress by relaxing a bit more. Listen to classical music, keep a journal, anything you like to do. Keeping stress out of your life will not only solve your canker sore problem, but a bunch of other health problems as well.

Canker sores are mobile. They can move and spread to other parts of the mouth. Do not bite, poke, or pop them in hopes of getting rid of the canker sore faster. If you have canker sores, wash it gently with warm water and mild soap. Avoid using the same washcloth on other bodyparts. You may prefer not sharing drinking glasses with another person until a sore has disappeared completely. If a sore persists for more than two weeks, see your doctor, as it may be something other than a canker sore.

Cold sores and canker sores are the two most common disorders in the human mouth. If you know the difference between the two, this will help your choice in treatment.

Location is the difference between cold sores and canker sores. While both can and do occur inside the mouth, the cold sore is more prominent outside the mouth. However, canker sores are only found inside the mouth, where they can affect the tongue, cheeks, lips, and in rare instances, the throat.

The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research says the cause of canker sores is not well understood. Viruses or bacteria do not invoke canker sores. Instead, they are the biproduct of allergic reactions, nutritional deficiencies, some form of autoimmune disease, emotional stress or hormonal imbalances.

Canker sore treatment can be allergy testing, nutritional supplements, non-prescription numbing agents (benzocaine), and mouth rinses containing an anti-inflammatory agent or an antibiotic (tetracycline). A 1:1 dilution of hydrogen peroxide with water is a common canker sore home remedy. This is then dabbed on the canker sore using a cotton swab. Milk of magnesia in small amounts can then be applied to the canker sore 3 or 4 times daily - soothing the canker sore and helping the healing process.

Cold sores are different. They are caused by the herpes simplex virus. Cold sores have been known to return even after the first sore is gone. Since it is a virus, it can be transmitted very easily through kissing.

Science has yet to find a cure for the herpes virus, so until then, one must rely on cream and other medication to take care of outbreaks.

Being a doctor of Internal Medicine and a Fellow of the American College of Physicians. I have always been an avid reader and have extensively delved into Homeopathy, Ayurveda, Nutrition, Environmental and Functional Medicine. For more than 18 years, I have been practicing. As I always had a sweet tooth, so at an early age of 16 I developed a cavity for which I got my first root canal and filling. My father took me to the best dentist in town and I came back sporting two amalgam fillings. I had no idea then, that amalgam was more than 50% mercury.

To continue it further; few months later I had the first sinus infection of my life. Then gradually there was a gradual almost unnoticeable decline in my health, so much so that when I would get up in the morning, tired. I felt indistinguishably achy.

With all what I was experiencing; I ascribed it to overwork and stress and continued to push myself. Soon after that I started developing headaches.

During my study of Environmental Medicine, I came to know that Amalgam was 50% Mercury and was toxic; I still did not make the correlation with my health. I thought vaguely that someday I would have the amalgams taken out but not yet. To get it done right cost thousands of dollars.

Fortunately I came across this book by Hal Huggin’s: "Uninformed consent" and I don’t know what motivated me I sought out a biological dentist and in a single setting had all the amalgam removed. The next morning, for the first time in 20 years, I woke up refreshed as I used to feel in my childhood. No aches, no pains, no fatigue and no more headaches.

Some astonishing facts about mercury

The most toxic and heaviest metal on earth is Mercury. Even in the so called bound form in amalgam, it vaporizes, it leaches, it travels to the brain, the heart, the thyroid, the liver, the kidneys, and the connective tissue.

Mercury’s first use can be traced back to 1800’s. Leukemia was first reported a few years after amalgam was put into widespread use as a dental filling material. It is curious that with all the strides that were made, in the field of Medicine and Dentistry they continued to use this material. Amalgam is treated as a toxic waste after it is removed from the fillings.

Though everybody including dentist and his staff would consider mercury as a hazardous material. Yet it is apparently OK to put it into people’s mouths. Many dental offices let the water with the removed amalgam just wash into the sewer system after which it ends up in our rivers and oceans.

According to Dr. Huggins; hypertension and heart disease are actually caused by heavy metal poisoning from mercury.

What actually happens is that if body has some mercury then it tries to marginalize the mercury by raising the cholesterol levels and closing the mercury off in plaques that line the arterial walls. So, Hyperlipidemia is a symptom not the disease itself according to him. There is plenty of evidence that heavy metal chelation for heart disease works.

Many cardiologists have now got into the act whereas before only maverick doctors were performing heavy metal chelation. If there was no heavy metal there in the first place, then why would chelation work? But, that is not all. Mercury was and is also being used as a preservative for vaccines, eyedrops etc. Under the name "thimerosol". Who would have guessed? Name changing is a wonderful thing.

So actually is it always like that? One can hide a lot of poisons by just changing their name. MSG becomes "natural flavor", mercury becomes amalgam etc etc. After the State of California banned the use of thimerosol in vaccines, their Autism rate declined.

What I have say is just that I hold no grudges against anyone what I am happy about is that now to wake up in the morning is as refreshing, energetic as when l was a sixteen year old.
