Most Individuals know that diet has something to do with it- and certainly sugar has - but why caries take place remains somewhat mysterious. To prevent the need for root canal treatments, one must remember that every case needing a root fill, other than those involving injury, started with a tiny bit of tooth decay.

Why do some people’s teeth decay and some do not? That question was central to Dr. Price’s enquiry.

Those feelings led him to conduct thousands of blood and saliva experiments on humans and animals, which brought forth many insights into the reasons teeth become carious. Unfortunately, much of this data was buried right along with his root infection discoveries because of disputes over the focal infection theory.

The two main discoveries regarding the causes of tooth decay were (1) the changing of the acid-base balance of the saliva from its normal alkaline status to one of acidity, and (2) the lowering of the ionic calcium levels in both the blood and the saliva.

Since Dr. Price’s time, these two factors were rediscovered by Harold Hawkins, D.D.S., Melvin Page, D.D.S., Emanuel Cheraskin, M.D.,D.M.D., and others.

Acidity of the saliva and lower calcium values resulting from the ingestion of white flour products, sugar, refined grain, and related products is still not fully understood by the average dentist.

Unfortunately, the dental and medical professions, in pushing the use of flourine in the prevention of caries, have failed to see that the process of tooth decay is a systemic, whole-body problem - not a local one.

Dentists and physicians have failed to see that systemic health problems are compounded because children and adults who use flourine feel they are protected, and that sweets and refined foods therefore won’t hurt their teeth. Furthermore, harmful systemic effects which involve parts of the body other than the mouth are seldom considered.

These factors relate to the unexpected finds that people who have tooth decay are also more susceptible to other degenerative disease.

A rather high percentage of people whose mouths are overly alkaline tend to develop periodontal disease. Usually they don’t develop tooth decay until the gum disease is far advanced. The softening of the dentin and cementum in these cases is often mistaken for caries but is a different phenomenon.

Knowing the chemistry involved in the occurrence of tooth decay and pyorrhea is fundamental to the understanding of these two disease. When tooth decay is present, the acid-base balance is depressed. That means it is on the acid side and the level of calcium is lower than normal. For those who have pyorrhea, the contents of the pockets are very alkaline and the calcium level is higher than normal.

Pockets can be the cause of the need for root canal treatment whenever a lateral accessory root canal opens into an infected pocket area, thereby allowing the bacteria in the pocket to be introduced into the tooth through the blood vessels which reside in the root canal.

Recently, within the last seven days actually, I purchased a HydroFloss. A what? Well, it is sort of like a high powered waterpik that uses magnetized water.

Why? For starters, I’m tired of my dentist complaining about my gingivitis which has now become mild to moderate periodontal disease. Will a HydroFloss change that? I honestly don’t know, yet. Based on what I’ve read about them, it may be possible. I’m a skeptic by nature though, but I’m also curious enough to try out different things. Sometimes that strategy works for me and sometimes it doesn’t.

I’ve had a lot of problems with dentists over the years. I don’t believe that all dentists are completely honest. In fact, I had a dentist tell me that I had a ‘trouble spot’ that she wanted to drill into. I went to another dentist who didn’t appear to detect any problem or any ‘trouble spot’ at all. That was after waiting six months. If there was a problem that was going to get worse, it certainly didn’t do so.

Another time, a dentist cheerfully suggested a root canal for a pain I was having in a tooth. I declined. In less than two weeks, that pain went away and never came back, without a root canal being done. That was about 14 years ago. I’ve heard stories from people who went to a dentist to be told that they had several cavities. Upon visiting a different dentist they were told they had none!

I find this trend disturbing. I go to a dentist to maintain my teeth and gums and to make sure that I keep the teeth with minimal damage to the gums. So when unnecessary procedures are recommended, I find it a little annoying. I should be able to trust my dentist but instead, I view her much like I view a car dealership when taking my car in for service. Watch the wallet or get taken. I shouldn’t have to feel that way about my dentist. But I do.

One of the best sales presentations I have ever seen was that of a dental hygienist. She wanted to sell me a ‘root scaling and planing’. During this procedure they anesthetize your gums and use metal instruments to scrape and scale along the root to remove plaque under the gumline.

I bet it hurts a lot when the anesthesia wears off. I was told this was the ‘only’ way to get rid of plaque under the gums. Since I declined the procedure, they wanted me to sign a waiver in case I lost my teeth as a result of not undergoing their prescribed treatment. I viewed this as another scare tactic. It also motivated me to find another solution.

Like I said before, I have only had my HydroFloss for a week, but I like the results I’m seeing so far. When finished using it, I feel like my gums have just had a good massage and it only takes a few minutes to go over my entire gumline.

I asked my dentist what she thought about the HydroFloss. She wasn’t convinced that it was any better than a waterpik. I decided to try it. If my dentist doesn’t like it, it might actually be good for me.

I’m not interested in losing my teeth due to gum disease. I have always kept good care of my teeth. It seems that brushing and flossing are just not enough for most people to avoid periodontal disease or gingivitis. Brushing too hard can erode the gumline, precisely what I wish to avoid. I reason that if I followed the same old advice, I would get the same results.

As for the HydroFloss, I believe I’m seeing a difference already, but I can’t be sure. There are no double blind studies being conducted on my body. My results are subjective. But I think I’ll know for sure in about a month. For now, I’m impressed.

If you have any questions about what your dentists finds or suggests, you may want to get a second opinion. That doesn’t hurt!

Every person, regardless of his occupation, social position or gender, can be a connoisseur in a particular sphere of knowledge but is usually ignorant in medicine. We are used to follow our therapist’s prescriptions without any hesitation. We’ve never taken effort to investigate the way this or that medicine works …But, actually, even if we did, I doubt we’d make head or tale of what is written in thick volumes of medical books. It looks like sometimes it’s worth doing…

The recent research in the field of salivary dysfunction field has shown that over 600 medications wide-spread nowadays lead to tooth decay through saliva inhibiting in our mouth. Meanwhile, saliva executes an important function of protecting our mouth from acid that destroys teeth. This acid is produced by bacteria while you eat sugar and it destroys the upper layer of our teeth. Salvia in its turn is rich in calcium and phosphate and flowing in it replaces the layer that has been removed.

Atropine, propanolol, clonidine and drugs similar to them take first place among the medications harmful for our teeth. These medicines either inhibit saliva production or alter its composition that is just as bad. Studies held on rats to see the relationship between cavity incidence, salvia flow and specific drugs, have shown that such drugs as atropine and its similarities, including antihistamines (eg, Benedryl) and some anti-depressants (eg, Elavil, Aventyl) retard the process of salvia secretion. Propanolol, in its turn, alters salviaТs composition causing tooth decay this way. The third drug under investigaton, clonidine, has been proved to prevent saliva producing by rducing neurotransmitters - stimulators of salivary glandsТ work.

This all is sad especially because these drugs are widely used by elderly people, together with those who have heart or hypertention problems. Clonidine, by the way, is used additionally to treat children with attention deficit problem.

Professor Watson calls doctors to reconsiderate using the above mentioned drugs or at least think about the dose reducing. This we, at least, can do if we are not able to fight such disorders as Sjogren’s syndrome, an autoimmune illness and damaged salivary glands, side effect of radiation therapy to the head or neck.

You might be saying to yourself, why would a consumer want laser tooth whitening gel or nite white whitening kits from an auction? well quite simply 1000’s of teeth whitening items are bought on ebay each day and a multitude of products such as perfect smile tooth whitening kits and professional teeth bleaching shields are brand new and unused. Find a category that is relevant to cosmetic dentistry and then type in your particular product or products of focus, So here’s the real secret for obtaining a great bargain on ebay, Imagine you are looking for a teeth bleaching toothpaste don’t just type that into the ebay search box, try as many teeth whitening kit connected searches as is reasonable because someone offering merchandise like opalescence tooth bleaching packs or aquafresh teeth bleaching pastes might have more than just one teeth whitening kit item on their merchandise list.

Another secret for finding whitening kits or linked items on ebay is this, you should take note of spelling errors, Just recently I acquired a teeth whitening tray for an amazing rate merely because I used a mass of spelling mistakes when I carried out my initial teeth whitening targeted searches with the ebay search facility. Thousands of teeth whitening kit items are sold on ebay each and every day and a large number of them have been advertised with spelling mistakes, an individual might be auctioning bleaching tooth vouchers or a blue light teeth bleaching kits and leave out one letter which means you may possibly be the only bidder interested in whitening kits and the only person to carry out the winning bid.

Another reason for purchasing whitening kits and cosmetic dentistry products on ebay is due to the fact that a healthy amount of unwanted whitening kits are put there due to the financial state of the person selling, a tooth bleaching wand being sold for 45 percent less than by cosmetic dentistry suppliers might not be as unusual to find than a buyer might think. A teeth whitening kit can sometimes find its way onto the ebay auction site simply because it was acquired in a government liquidation sale, you may sometimes end up buying whole stack of teeth whitening kit accessories and if you are experienced may perhaps sell them on and clear a decent profit to re-invest on some kind of useful teeth whitening kit accessory.

Wholesale priced whitening kits can also be accessed with the aid of ebay, today you may perhaps have been looking for a tooth whitener light via one of the cosmetic dentistry sites and now find that these kinds of goods can also be sourced for less than the recommended retail value. So not only can ebay help you to discover items like buffalo teeth whitener kits or colgate teeth bleaching kits it might also open your eyes to the chances of making cash from re-selling whitening kits.

Not to sound vain, I often receive several compliments on my dentition and the apparent absence of any sign of tooth decay. Besides my mother’s genes; other factors come into strong play: Proper Maintenance and Diet. Most People in the west pay very little attention to proper dental hygiene or use absurd chemical substances such as toothpaste containing the poisonous fluoride in a quest to avoid or perhaps repair tooth decay.

Furthermore, they wonder why halitosis still persists. Nothing more is required to clean the teeth than a firm tooth-brush and a little un-iodized sea-salt or if you are adventurous, a chew-stick (ask any African Friend if you have one.) Moreover, daily consumption of leafy veggies is essential as a natural step to curtailing tooth decay.

Tooth Decay: Causes of Cavities

Cavities or tooth decay can be caused by constant acidity in your mouth which is a consequence of over consumption of acid (mucus) forming foods. Eating these foods leads to acidic blood which would rob calcium from the bones as this is necessary to neutralize the acids. (Which is one other reason to reduce high protein foods of the vegetable kingdom

Eating foods that have excessively high potassium and phosphorus contents without the counter balancing calcium makes the body rob its own self of calcium which causes tooth decay. Honey is another culprit in the cause of cavities (along with white sugar).

No one is saying to not eat nuts and seeds or less harming grains like rice, millet, quinoa or amaranth but be sure to offset them with green leafy vegetables and of course reduce the consumption of them.

By the way, for a way better source of first, proteins: instead of excessive nuts opt for avocadoes, green coconuts, dates and olives. Secondly for Carbohydrates: Sweet fruits and root vegetables.

Illustrated below will be a recommended method of cleaning the teeth.

Tooth Decay: Preventive Measures and Cleaning Procedures.

1, First rinse the mouth with a little saline water first thing in the morning.

2. Now brush the teeth first in an up-and-down rotary, motion, working the upper incisors, canines, molars and premolars. (Ensure to brush the anterior regions).

3. Perform the same procedures in 2 on the lower teeth.

4. Rinse the mouth again with saline water.

5. Now massage each tooth with your clean index finger, ensuring that you reach the wisdom teeth in the corners.

6. Rinse the mouth again.

7. Massage the gums with the fingers in a mild sideways motion. This is essential as it strengthens the gums and squeezes out the impure matters from its pores.

8. Rinse The mouth.

9. Now massage the upper palate of the mouth all the way to top of the tonsils.

10. Rinse the mouth.

Also, keep in mind that nothing can cause tooth decay as fasts as nuts, seeds and grains in excess. According to research on the perfect health and excellent dentition of the Polynesians, whose diet was composed of 85% Starchy Root Vegetables, as soon as a change in their diet occurred by replacing their staple foods with grains, they started to experience excessive tooth decay early in childhood.

This goes to show that a diet comprised of mainly Fruits, leafy and root vegetables, will be the best choice to avoiding tooth decay along with the steps above.

Don’t permit yourself to be exploited by the many marketers and charlatans out to make a fast buck on the expense of the vulnerable, to gain a healthy and beautiful smile (and perfect health) first make the suggested change above to a healthier diet and apply the steps given above for lasting success.

Remember, in the words of Henry Ward Beecher: “…A smile is the light in the windows of the face, by which the heart signifies it is at home and waiting…”

Make your smile beautiful starting today.

Consider the power of a smile: It may happen in a flash, but the memory of it somehow lasts a lifetime. Shouldn’t an assessment of one’s front teeth, therefore, be where all modern makeovers begin?

Teeth are, after all, the true personality of a smile. So if we cover them due to imperfections, then no matter what we do to turn back the time with our skin, clothes, makeup and hair, we would still run a risk of getting lost in the crowd.

On the other hand, alongside the arrival of so many aesthetic treatments to combat aging, advancements in the field of cosmetic dentistry are credited for delivering astonishing, life-changing effects. According to LVI Global, the world-renowned school of advanced dental studies, a new and beautiful smile makeover can now be completed much more quickly than in the past, in perhaps just two or three visits. Even the most uneven smiles can be straightened without the need for unsightly, uncomfortable, and time-consuming metal braces.

Here is a sampling of what can be done:

Whitening of discolored or stained teeth
Straightening of crooked or overlapping teeth
Gaps closed
Chipped and worn teeth repaired
Missing teeth replaced
Lengthening, or shortening uneven teeth for a uniform appearance
Replacing unsightly metal fillings with natural or tooth-colored ones
Reduction or elimination of a “gummy” smile.

LVI Global has trained thousands of dentists around the world and many graduates are practicing in Canada. Please click here to learn more about cosmetic dentistry and see before and after pictures.

Tooth whitening, also called bleaching, is a process of lightening and removing stains from a tooth. This process bleaches the enamel and dentin, the principal mass of a tooth, and brightens the discolored teeth.

Dentists advise on the many methods of tooth whitening available in the market. Some of the methods of tooth whitening are the use of over-the-counter whitening systems; dentist dispensed at-home products, laser tooth whitening method; Loaded Tray Teeth Whitening method and in-office whitening methods. Dentists consider tooth bleaching using peroxide chemical as the best option for maximum whitening result.

The simple and straightforward method of tooth whitening is the use of over-the-counter topical teeth whitening products that includes whitening toothpastes and gels, whitening strips, a band aid containing peroxide to place directly on the teeth, are most effective among all other over-the-counter products.

In the Loaded Tray method of Tooth Whitening, dentists load prescribed bleaching or whitening gel Carbamide Peroxide inside the custom-made or ready-made tray and fix it with the gum. The chemical reacts with saliva to release Hydrogen Peroxide and substantial whitening is noticed after two to three weeks of wearing the tray.

In the Laser Teeth Whitening method, Carbamide Peroxide, a bleaching agent, is applied directly to the teeth together with laser to quickly activate the reaction between the teeth and the peroxide. This clinical treatment is costlier than all other methods of teeth whitening.

In the Blue Light Teeth Whitening method, a blue light is used to quickly activate the reaction between Hydrogen Peroxide and the teeth. The effect of this professional treatment lasts for several years. Users of this professional method of teeth whitening visualize the effect immediately after few clinical sitting with the dentist.

In Home-based methods of teeth whitening, home-based gels containing a solution of carbamide / hydrogen peroxide is used which give good result after prolonged usage.

People dedicated to a busy lifestyle should use professional methods of teeth whitening for perfecta teeth whitening, while others can patiently bleach at home using home-based methods.
